Hello everybody!

April 16th, 2013

Nice to meet you all. My name is Anne Geggis and I’m your new Florida Press Club president. I work at the South Florida Sun Sentinel as a city reporter, in particular covering Boca Raton. I’m proud to carry the banner for the Florida Press Club and hope that you will join us. Thanks to Sherry Mims and Trisha Cormeny for their work before me.

Now that our industry shrinkage seems to have passed, I’m hoping to reinvigorate our membership. And I would like to start by inviting you to email me at fpcpresident@gmail.com. I would love to start sharing our best work on this site and become more actively engaged with our members about what they would like from their press club.

Contest Coordinator Fred Bellet and I are contemplating the next contest season that will be starting in a few months. So check back here for updates!

Thank you and best wishes for 2013 and beyond!

Thank you for your dedication and support to Florida Press Club this year. As many of you know, I stepped down as president following the 61st Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards Banquet in Malabar, but I’ve been helping with the finances and social media until the new board is in place in January. It’s been a great two years as president, but I’m a big believer in change. Over the past two years, we’ve:

  • Increased our membership
  • Established a social media presence (FLPressClub on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest)
  • Used an online contest platform
  • Held writing and publishing workshops
  • Saved 36 percent in banquet costs by skipping the resort and supporting a family-owned business

I hope you keep such a wonderful momentum going, and I look forward to seeing how the club evolves. Right now, President-elect Trisha Cormeny is mailing out plaques and planning next year’s schedule. (If you’ve emailed her, please be patient, as she has had a family emergency recently.) I already know Trisha as well as Anne Geggis have some creative FPC ideas in mind, so stay tuned!

It’s been an honor getting to know each and every one of you. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas or Kwanzaa, we at the Florida Press Club hope it’s joyous. Again, thank you, and best of luck!

Sincerely,

Sherry Mims

November 10th, 2012

Thank you all for coming, celebrating our winners and even tweeting (#FPCBanquet) at Yellow Dog Café in Malabar. It was a long drive for some of you! We’d especially like to thank Florida Today’s Digital Editor Jeff Meesey, South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Anne Geggis (also FPC Membership Coordinator), FPC Vice President Trisha Cormeny (and Jason Cormeny) and Amir Fleminger (Sherry’s husband) for their help.

Congratulations to our winners! Our full list (Google Docs again) is here. Questions/comments fpcpresident[at]gmail[dot]com, but please be patient, as we get a high volume of emails. Thank you!
